Supriya Sule : Feminism or Tokenism?

<p dir="ltr">Surfing news channels for my daily dose of current affairs while sipping late morning tea, a lady answering audience questions on ABP news caught my attentuon. This was Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP suprimo Sharad Pawar, in a program titled 'Ghoshnapatra'. Political biases aside, I must say I was impressed with the grace with which she answered some serious and tough questions, may it be about Farmers' suicides in Maharshtra or Dynasty politics. </p><p dir="ltr">What caunght my attention was her answers to two differnt random questions, that strangely connected on one subject.</p><p dir="ltr">A gentleman in flowery words questioned her about Dynasty politics. Obviously, this was directed towards her own 'Pawar-house' (*hint, pun). To which she gave example of R.R.Patil (Home Minister Maharashtra) who has no political background. Also, she mentioned about Nationalist Congress Party's efforts in incresing women's participation in politics right from grass-root level and how they have reached out to Women in rural Maharashtra.</p><p dir="ltr">After few other questions, another gentleman pointed out that often her name is mentioned as a candidate for the post of Maharashtra's CM...will the people see her as Maharashtra's first female CM? </p><p dir="ltr">The answer to this question is always a shy denial, but the way she denied was what impressed me the most. "I am against any kind of tokenism. A female CM does not guarantee safety and security for women. Uttar Pradesh had a female CM (Miss Mayavati) for four terms and we all know about the situation there." - She denied and NOT! </p><p dir="ltr">She cleverly denied any sexist ethusiasms and left the question on CM's post unanswered. We all know what an unanswered question means. </p><p dir="ltr">Every now and then we see people demanding more posts be headed by females, since that would ensure soltion to women's issues. Is this not sexism...against women? Are we saying a person should be given a certain post and celebrated only becuse the pronoun associated is 'SHE'? In doing so are we not undermining that person's talents and capabilities? And most importantly, drawing from Supria Sule's words, aren't we trading Feminism for Tokenism, thereby opening new ways for women to be exploited? (Remember how Lalu Prasad Yadav used Rabri Devi as a remote control? <p dir="ltr">कैंटीन में कुछ कूल-ड्यूड्स का गैंग बैठा बकैती काट रहा था। एक ने बड़े ताव के साथ शेर मारा,"सदियाँ गुज़र गईं, रहा है दुश्मन दौर-ए-जहाँ हमारा..." और आगे बखान करने लगा की किस प्रकार ये सारे 'संस्कृति के रक्षक' कैसे जाहिल है और निरर्थक कामों में अपना समय व्यर्थ करते हैं। व्यर्थ में ही लोग हर बात में चिल्ल-पों मचाये रहते है। सब चलता है बॉस, चिल!</p> <p dir="ltr">पास ही बैठे, चाय की चुस्कियां लेता मैं मन ही मन मुस्कुरा उठा। कितने ज्ञानी हैं ये छोरे! कितनी कम आयु में कितना गूढ़ ज्ञान! सही तो कहा इन छोरों ने, ये भी कोई तुक हुआ कि जब देखो तब ये संस्कृति के रक्षक रास्तों पर निकल आते हैं और फिल्मों में अश्लीलता पर बवाल मचाते हैं। अरे देख लो पुराने मंदिरों को जहाँ हर मूर्ती नग्न होती है। फिर इन्हें सनी लियोनि से इतना कष्ट क्यों? यदि आप स्वयं पर नियंत्रण रख सकते हैं तो मदिरा पर प्रतिबन्ध क्यों लगाया जाये? किसी भी चीज़ पर प्रतिबन्ध लगाया ही क्यों जाये? लोग समझदार हैं। उन्हें निर्णय करने दीजिये ना कि उनके लिए क्या लाभ है और क्या हानि।</p> <p dir="ltr">छोरों ने बड़े तार्किक प्रश्न उठाये थे। मेरा मन चाय की चुस्कियाँ लेता एक प्रश्न से दुसरे पर छलांग लगाने लगा।...</p> <p dir="ltr">फिल्मों में अश्लीलता...सनि लियोनि...मंदिरों में देवताओं की नग्न मूर्तियाँ?<br> ये मूर्तियाँ तो उस युग की हैं ना जब मनुष्य कपडे केवल आवश्यकतानुसार पहनता था? साज-सज्जा के लिए तो आभूषण हुआ करते थे। और ये हर कोई करता था - क्या नारी, क्या पुरुष...क्या माता,क्या पुत्री, क्या प्रेयसी और क्या पत्नी। फिर उस समय मैनीक्योर-पेडीक्योर भी नहीं थे, ना ही महिलाएं 'वैक्सिंग' करवाती थीं। हर मूर्ती का अवलोकन करने पर यह भी पता चलता है की नर-नारी के शारीर पूर्णतया प्राकृतिक थे...कोई सिक्स-पैक-एब्स नहीं, कोई पपीते सामान बाइसेप्स नहीं और ना ही सिलिकॉन भरे वक्ष! हर मूर्ती में हल्का सा पेट निकला हुआ। तो क्या इन सब न को भी नहीं अपनाना चाहिए? क्या गुलाब से उसके कंटक पृथक कर केवल पुष्प ही उगाये जा सकते हैं? क्या कमल को बिन कीचड खिलाया जा सकता है? </p> <p dir="ltr">परन्तु सनी लियोनि ने भी तो वही किया है जो खजुराहो के मंदिरों की मूर्तियाँ करती दिखती हैं। नहीं? पर क्या ऐसा नहीं कि जहाँ ये मूर्तियाँ सम्भोग क्रिया को योग सामान दर्शाती हैं तथा इस क्रिया को पवित्रता के चन्दन का टीका लगाती हैं, वहीं सनी लियोनि तथा उनके जैसी अन्य मादक बालाएं इस क्रिया को केवल मनोरंजन के साधन के रंग में रंगती हैं। जहाँ ये मूर्तियाँ सेक्स को 'सम-भोग' बताती हैं तथा पुरुष तथा नारी शरीर को पूज्य दर्शाती हैं, वहीं ये 'आइटम-गर्ल्स' तथा 'पोर्न-स्टार्स' नारी शारीर को एक भोग की वस्तु के रूप में दर्शाती हैं। क्या ऐसे में नारीवाद की तूती बजाने वालों को भी इन जाहिल-गंवार 'संस्कृति के रक्षक' पाले में नहीं जुड़ जाना चाहिए? पर कदाचित मैं अज्ञानी किसी कुतर्क को पकड़ बैठा हूँ।</p> <p dir="ltr">ध्यान भंग हुआ तो मैं अपनी आधी चाय सुड़क चूका था तथा आधी बची हुई पर्ण-घुट्टी अर्थात चाय ठंडी हो रही थी, वहीं बगल के क्रन्तिकारी विचारों वाले कूल ड्यूड्स अब नारी मुक्ति और नारी सशक्तिकरण की बातें पेल रहे थे। ऐसी ज्ञान की गंगा बहते देख मुझे विश्वास हो चुका था कि इस देश का भविष्य उज्वल है। अब मैं एक और चाय की चुस्की ले कर पुनः अपने विचारों की लौह-पथ-गामिनी अर्थात रेलगाड़ी में सवार हो गया...</p> <p dir="ltr">हाँ तो क्या था दूसरा प्रश्न? मदिरा पान पर प्रतिबन्ध क्यों? उस कूल-ड्यूड ने बात तो एकदम राईट एंड ब्राइट कही थी - यदि आप स्वयं पर नियंत्रण रख पाओ तो मदिरापान पर प्रतिबन्ध क्यों हो। प्रतिबन्ध की छोडिये, बुराई क्या है शराब में? सहसा मन में बलराज सहनी जी गाते हुए प्रकट हुए - "हम ने पी शराब, तुम ने क्या पिया, आदमी का खून?"</p> <p dir="ltr">'नियंत्रण' - मेरा मन इस शब्द की परिक्रमा करने लगा। मनुष्य मदिरापान क्यों करता है? स्वयं पर नियंत्रण खोने के लिए ना? यदि नियंत्रण है तो नशा कैसा? और यदि नशा ही नहीं तो मदिरापान क्यों? यदि स्वाद के लिए पीना है तो लस्सी का स्वाद इस कडवे द्रव्य से स्वादिष्ट है, नहीं? कदाचित मैं अज्ञानी, इस भेद को ना समझ पाउँगा। परन्तु क्या ये सत्य नहीं कि गुजरात जैसे राज्य में दारु पर प्रतिबन्ध केवल नारी संगठनों के अथक प्रयासों का नतीजा ही है? क्या यह भी सत्य नहीं कि निर्भया का बलात्कार करने वाले भी नशे में धुत्त थे और ये कि आयेदिन किसी धनाढ्य परिवार की संतान दारू और ड्रग्स के नशे में डूबे अपनी गाडी के नीचे फुटपाथ पर सोये लोगों को कुचल देते हैं? Also, I recall Nirbhaya's case when one of the Rapists name, Raam Singh, was also dragged into a question, while one accused's name never came out. I'm sure, the readers can see what I'm pointing at. Just a few days back when a Shiv Sena MLA tried to force feed the substandard quality food to the one who served it to make his point, Media ran the news 24x7. I can site many such examples. <b>Why s</b></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><b>elective outrage by media and intellectuals? Skewed Secularism? </b></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Now that we have established that the media is biased, let us try to find what caused it. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Remember the violence witnessed by Mumbai, Patna and other cities by 'Peaceful' protesters who marched out chanting slogans in protest of violence against Rohingya Muslims in some other country...in Myanmar? Remember people out on roads holding placards about saving Gaza and shouting slogans against Israel? I'm sure you do. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Now, remember People shouting slogans protesting against injustice on Kashmiri Pundits? Remember people on streets marching to support IPS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal? Remember people in other parts of India marching in support of Bodos and against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants? Remember outrage against Jove Jihad? No, you dont. Right? Why? because Hindus never went out and marched for themselves. Hindus </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">have taken the lesson of Secularism and all its skewed interpretations too seriously and tried to avoid every issue that involves another community's members as perpetrators. Sure, they may march out with candles when they are sure that there is not any 'communal' angle to it. I am yet to see an angry Hindu mob that comes out marching on road shouting slogans, let alone harm public property for something that concerns exclusively their own kind. You might feel inclined to point out the Ayodhya issue, but those were the times when Yusuk Khan was known as Dilip Kumar and the difference in population of the Majority and 'the' minority was huge, since most migrated to Pakistan. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Crux of the matter is if you want Media to pay heed, go violent. If you chose to use peaceful means like courts and expect the government to do everything for you, know that the media will turn a blind eye. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So, in the end who do I find are the real culprits? Not the perpetrators, not the media, not even the government... the burden of responsibility for this situation is on every Hindu who in his enthusiasm to maintain a <i>secular </i>image turned a blind eye to issues relating to her/his community that cried for attention. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This was rape, <b>twice, </b>on - 1. The Girl's body. 2. The victim's religion. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The perpetrators knew well that they would go unpunished for both the offences. They knew well that the media will look the other way if caught.
